CMS Announces Comparative Billing Report for Podiatry in October 2014

In a recent MLN Connects Provider eNews release, CMS announced that it will issue a national provider Comparative Billing Report (CBR) on podiatry in October 2014, specifically focusing on debridement of ulcers and wounds. The CBR will contain “data-driven tables and an explanation of findings that compare a provider’s billing and payment patterns to those of their peers” both within their state and nationally. CMS has indicated that CBRs are intended to be an educational tool that provides comparative data on how the provider varies from other providers in the same specialty payment area or locality. The CBR will be produced by CMS contractor eGlobalTech.

CBRs are only available to the providers who receive them directly; the reports are not otherwise publicly accessible. Fax is the default method for disseminating CBRs and CMS has advised providers to update their fax numbers in the Medicare Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System (PECOS) to ensure any CBRs issued are received. Providers can contact the CBR Support Help Desk (800-771-4430) or email to request that CBRs be sent through the U.S. Postal Service.

CMS also announced that contractor eGlobalTech and its partner, Palmetto GBA, will offer an informational webinar addressing the podiatry CBR on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 and Thursday, October 30, 2014 from 3-4 pm ET.   The agenda for the webinar includes an overview of the podiatry CBR, a discussion of the coverage policy for podiatry debridement services, methodology report and resources, as well as a question and answer session. Interested participants can register for the webinar online and a recording of the webinar will be available five days after the event.
