CMS Announces April 2015 Release of Ophthalmology Comparative Billing Report; Upcoming Webinar for Modifier 25: Nurse Practitioner Comparative Billing Report

CMS recently announced that it will issue a Comparative Billing Report (CBR) focused on ophthalmology providers in April 2015. Pursuant to the March 19, 2015 MLN Connects Provider News, the CBRs will be produced by CMS contractor eGlobalTech, and will “contain data driven tables and graphs with an explanation of the findings that compare these providers’ billing and payment patterns to those of their peers” both across their state and nationally. The CMS announcement does not indicate which ophthalmology services in particular the CBRs will focus on.

Most recently, eGlobalTech issued a CBR addressing the use of Modifier 25 in connection with CPT codes 99211-99215 by nurse practitioners. The CBR was disseminated to select providers in March 2015. Interested providers can attend an informational webinar addressing the Modifier 25: Nurse Practitioner CBR on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. EST by registering online.

CBRs are intended to be a tool to help providers gain a better understanding of applicable Medicare billing rules. CBRs are not made publically available; the reports are only accessible to those providers who receive them. Providers should update their fax numbers in the Medicare Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System (PECOS), as faxing is the default method for sending CBRs. Providers that prefer to receive CBRs through the U.S. Postal Service can contact the CBR Support Help Desk or
